Breath-taking Heights: Daddyhole Plain & The Coast Path
If you want to escape the hustle of the town center, head uphill to Daddyhole Plain. Standing 75 meters above sea level, this limestone plateau offers what many consider the best view in Torbay. The name “Daddyhole” is derived from an old Devon term for the Devil, who was said to live in the chasm (the “hole”) created by a prehistoric cliff fall.
The Experience: This is a prime section of the South West Coast Path. From the plain, you can look out toward the iconic Thatcher Rock, a jagged limestone island that sits just off the coast. The area is a haven for wildlife; keep an eye out for Peregrine Falcons nesting in the cliffs. It’s a relatively easy walk from the harbour, but the payoff is immense. You can follow the path down to Meadfoot Beach, a local favorite with turquoise waters that look like they belong in the Caribbean rather than the English Channel.
- Top Tip: Pack a picnic and a pair of binoculars. On a clear day, you can see right across the Bay to the lighthouse at Berry Head in Brixham.
- Location: Daddyhole Road, Torquay, TQ1 2ED.
